What Information Should You Prepare For Your Urethane Manufacturer?


urethane shapesNow that we’ve walked you through the questions to ask your thermoset polyurethane manufacturer before you begin the project,  we’re going to turn the tables and discuss the important information you should be ready to share when you speak with your urethane manufacturer about your application. It’s likely that in the process of developing your product, you’ve already considered exactly how you’ll explain what you need to the company you’re working with. What Environment Will it Be in?
This is one of those questions that seems simple enough, but often we forget that unseen forces like moisture and humidity can have a huge effect on our machines. When we ask about environment, we want to know if your final application will be in a humid or arid environment, so we know whether to choose an ether (which is ideal for humidity), or an ester (which is perfect for a dryer environment). This little bit of information helps develop a custom formulation for unique needs.

What will the equipment be used for?
This piece of information, while often coming up immediately in our first discussion, helps shape the whole process of developing your component. We need to know what the equipment will be used for, and more specifically if it’s going to be subjected to a high temperature. A great example of this is a label printer, which works at a very high temperature, subjecting the roller to heat for extensive amounts of time.  At Mearthane we have a lot of experience creating rollers for business machines, and knowing how the temperature it will be subjected to is crucial to deciding what material is will be formulated with.  For label printers,  a rubber roller is the most ideal because rubber can withstand those higher temperatures.

What’s the Medium?
The information we derive from this question has a direct effect on the formulation of the component we’re producing for you. We need to know what medium it will be subjected to.  For business machines like printers, this is usually ink and maybe a few other chemicals. Since the custom urethanes we produce are polymers, they will be affected by different combinations of chemicals – especially after long periods of exposure from everyday use. We like to get as specific as possible, so we’ll want to know not only that the medium is ink, but also what kind of ink. This helps us determine the material of the roller for printing applications, allowing us to produce a product that lasts longer because it doesn’t break down from exposure to your medium.

Estimated Life Needed?
Like a tire on a car, we need to know the estimated life of your equipment so we can develop a component with a lifespan that matches. You wouldn’t put brand new 80,000 mile Ferrari tires on a 15 year old chevy. Tell us about the average life of your machine and we’ll formulate a roller or other component that will last as long as it does, it’s that simple!
