Urethane and Conductivity

MPC's expertise in conductivity continues to improve performance in assemblies vulnerable to electromagnetic and electrostatic interference. We custom formulate and fabricate conductive polyurethanes to eliminate ESD in a broad range of applications including:

  • Rollers for paper handling systems
  • Load wheels
  • Ride and attraction wheels
  • Cleanroom conveyor systems
  • Material handling systems (glass, food, computer chips, etc.)

Durethane® C

MPC can custom formulate a Durethane® conductive solid or foam polyurethane using Durethane® C urethane elastomers to improve system performance where electrostatic dissipation is an issue. For more information on Durethane® C, see our products section.

Conductive RIM

MPC's Conductive Reaction-Injection-Molding (RIM) urethane technology combines the physical properties of reaction-injection-molded polyurethane with electrical conductivity. With volume resistivity between E7 ohm-cm and E10 ohm-cm, conductive RIM can be used for electrostatic dissipation in a wide range of components and applications, including: rollers and paper handling mechanisms in business machines; enclosures and packaging for sensitive electronics; and materials-handling equipment.

RIM is widely used in automotive fascia because of its light weight, physical strength, and superior surface finish. By making RIM electrically conductive, MPC has eliminated the need for conductive primers or additives that degrade the material’s physical properties. Class A paint finishes have been achieved using this technology, with successful Florida Aging Test results.

Access to the technology is available through MPC in the form of custom-manufactured components, and through technology licensing and other arrangements.

Advantages of Conductive RIM

  1. Eliminates the need for expensive and problematic surface coating processes of other plastics.
  2. Exhibits superior physical properties compared to polymers that have been made conductive through high-percentage loadings of carbon black or metallic fillers.
  3. Easy to process.
  4. Possesses all the well-known performance attributes of polyurethane, including: high abrasion and chemical resistance, plus a wide latitude in durometer, coefficient of friction (COF), and resilience.
